About the Department

Top

The mission of the Department of Physics and Electronics is to impart education both at basic and advanced levels. The department has well equipped electronics laboratory, nuclear physics laboratory, and solid state physics laboratory apart from a basic physics and electronics laboratory where students not only hone their experimental skills but also learn and clear various concepts in basic physics and electronics. Further, eminent scientists and educationists from IITs and universities are invited every year to deliver a lecture series in basic and advanced topics in physics. The faculty of the department, besides teaching, is also engaged in front line research activities in the field of condensed matter physics, nuclear theory, microwave theory and nanomaterials. Some of these research activities are in collaboration with the premier research institutes in the country. Faculty members regularly contribute their research work in national and international conferences as well as in the peer reviewed international journals having high impact factor. A 14” telescope imported from Celestron, USA is an added attraction and is used regularly for observing various astronomical events.

Radioactive Source Preparation Centre

Top

This is our most prestigious program, approved by Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Govt. of India. It is worth mentioning that Department of Physics at IPS Academy is the only place in the country outside DAE centers, where permission to prepare laboratory grade radioactive sources has been granted by the DAE. We prepare low dose radioactive sources for use in Nuclear Physics Laboratories & research activities under permission from DAE.

Space Observatory

Top

Department of Physics has installed a 14 inch celestrone telescope with fully computerized and auto tracking system. The sky has opened up for the IPS Academy community as well as for the general public from Indore and other nearby towns. We regularly show the astronomical events to the students and general public, whenever such events occur.

Equipment Fabrication Work

Dr. Lalit Gupta
Brief description of the research work conducted during his visit to Elettra, Trieste, 2009-10:
Because of some specific characteristics and wide applications of Free Electron Laser, he choose to do his research work in the development of a source of Free Electron Laser at Elettra. The following tasks performed by him during his visit to the elettra:
He concentrated on learning and modifying computer code which is very important and necessary for alignments of undulators and electron beam transportation in transfer line, is based on Beam Based Alignment technique. He learn the Graphical User Interface (GUI) technique in Matlab to calculate the energy of electron beam at the end of first Linear Accelerator. Moreover, he had modified an existing code (Matlab tool) used to match the beam optics as it is produced by the injector to the design optics of the magnetic lattice downstream of the injector. The code is now routinely used for this kind of electron beam manipulation and transport through the first part of the FERMI linac.
Brief description of the research work conducted during his visit to ENEA, Italy- 2008-09:
Some unique characteristics and wide applications of terahertz radiation he chose this area for his research work in the field of Terahertz radiation.
He participated in the experiments related to generation of Terahertz radiation by compact Free Electron Laser. He used the source of compact FEL for Imaging Technology in which we took images of several different objects. As an object we first took the image of 1 Euro, 2 Euro coin and an image of 20 Euro Note and study the reflection of laser light. Then we tested the High electron mobility transistors (HEMT) with terahertz radiation and observed images of different micro components of the electronic circuits. Then we characterize a very old wooden frame of ancient time of 600/ 700 century and took the reflection and transmission image of the object. We also analysed the new fibre material by THz radiation which is going to be used for the construction of new Air Planes instead of metals.

Setting up of a NANO MATERIALS RESEARCH LABORATORY has been initiated. Initially the emphasis is on the preparation and characterization of nanoparticles and nanorods using chemical and high temperature methods, respectively. For this, essential chemicals and a high temperature TUBULAR FURNACE which can go up to 10000 C have been procured.. Using these methods nanoparticles of Nickel, Cobalt and Iron & nanorods of Copper oxide, Zinc oxide and Phosphor Bronze have been prepared. These particles and rods have been characterized using X-RAY DIFFRACTION (XRD), SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AND TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. Preliminary results are interesting and efforts are been made to characterize them in detail and to explore possible applications of these materials.
All the preparation of samples is done at IPS ACADEMY, Indore and characterization is carried out at University Grant Commission-Department of Atomic Energy Consortium for Scientific Research (UGC-DAE-CSR), Indore Centre.

Dr. Shyam Naik
Presently we are studying the low dimensionality effects on the soft condensed matter thin films. We deposit the well defined single crystalline soft condensed matter thin film using LB technique. Using soft x-ray reflectivity (at synchrotron radiation source Indus-1, Indore, India), temperature dependent hard x-ray reflectivity and diffraction, temperature dependent Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements (at UGC-DAE-CSR, Indore, India), small angle x-ray scattering measurements (at Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Light source, California, USA ), in plane x-ray diffraction measurements (at ELETTRA, Trieste ITALY) we are studying the effect of surface interaction energy, effects of number of monolayers and effect of synchrotron irradiation on the structure of these films. This study is important to understand the basic physics of similar types of systems and the area of fundamental interest.
